Cancer is, loosely described, a pro-inflammatory state. If you take the position that this is an important fact, and it is admittedly debatable, then eating foods that can decrease the inflammatory state is a very good thing. The bottom line is that this is a "gimme" in a way. There is little harm that can result from focusing on anti-inflammatory foods, even if the benefit is not clearly proven. I did not say dis-proven, I said that is it unproven....but there is scientific data that strongly suggests there is a benefit. A little more data and we may have a CLEAR winner. So, the overall recommendation would be to go ahead. OK, what might be some of the components of an anti-inflammatory diet?.....especially components that can benefit the anti-cancer fight in other ways?
The answer is: fish oils. Specifically focus on taking in Omega 3 Fatty Acids, which are anti-inflammatory as opposed to Omega 6, which is pro-inflammatory and Omega 9 which does not help or hurt. There is some scientific data that fish oil supplementation prolongs survival when fighting cancer and even more data that says it helps maintain muscle mass while undergoing treatment. The latter is VERY important because cancer is a "wasting" state which reduces your body's proteins, including the ones that are important for a strong immune system. How do you get the best quality supplementation? Back to nature is the answer for starters. Eat 4 or more helpings of cold water fish per week. In addition, to get to a reasonable level of supplementation (between 4000 and 6000mg/day), consider finding the best quality supplement possible which contains eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ****CAUTION****, if you go over 6000mg/day, this can cause bleeding, especially if you are on chemotherapy or warfarin(Coumadin) therapy for blood clots, or headed for surgery. Consult your doctor always! It is sometimes confusing interpreting the labels on supplements. You are looking to get BOTH EPA and DHA at a total of say 3000mg/day....say as a supplement to what you are eating. The label may say there is 1000mg of fish oil but it contains 300mg of EPA and 200mg of DHA for a total of 500mg of these two (DHA + EPA). This means that to get 3000mg/day you will need to take 6 capsules per day. What about plant sources of Omega 3 Fatty Acids? Unfortunately the main Omega 3 players.....DHA and EPA.... are missing. These plants include flaxseed, canola oil and walnuts...and do contain alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), another Omega 3. Our bodies are not designed to convert ALA into the more useful DHA and EPA, so eat your cold-water fish and get the proper fish based supplements.
