| lymph | The lymphatic system, which is the core of the immune system, partly serves to help drain tissue fluid from all areas of the body. Microscopic lymphatic vessels drain into regional centers where there are clusters of lymph nodes that strain the lymphatic fluid streaming through them. The fluid is then eventually returned to the blood circulation system. Cancer can spread by way of the lymphatic system, and is central to staging of most gynecologic cancers. Success or failure of treatment often depends on whether the regional lymph nodes are involved (advanced stage) with cancer. |
